I’ve just discovered a really excellent and very exciting gallery. It’s off Au Co, down lane 124 that leads past Tu Lien market and down to where the cumquat trees are being readied for Tet and to the drought riven dry reaches of the river and a temporary village on the banks full of ceramic pots which is an unmissable installation in itself…

Asia Now brings together some of Asia’s most prominent and promising contemporary artists. With stalwarts of the contemporary art scene such as Affandi and emerging voices such as Yang Yongliang, this exhibition seeks to highlight the development of contemporary Asian art over the past few decades, as well as engage the current debates which consume it.
As the networks, links and friendships between Australia and Asia spark and solidify, artists from our region have sought to reflect our increasingly close relationship.

Artist Nguyen Xuan Long’s latest exhibition turns aphorisms into an art form.
Think of the farmer while eating the fruit: An installation by Nguyen Xuan Long that features postcards with words written in Vietnamese. Visitors to the exhibition are free to take the postcards home.

As part of Long’s installation, blocks of postcards are attached to the wall. On each card is a word in Vietnamese, written in a calligraphic style and in a single bold colour. The word is just one in a proverb, like Mieng ngon nho lau, loi dau nho doi (good food is memorable; sharp words remain undiluted) revealed on the reverse of the card which viewers have to turn over to discover. This interaction creates a ‘chatty’ tone between viewer and artist, especially as the viewer can take the postcard home if he or she desires. It’s also a touching way for visitors to share Long’s passion for proverbs.

What do you want Ha Noi to be like in the future?
A new exhibit answers just that as organisers showcase the hopes and dreams of urbanites in the northern capital.
The exhibition called Ha Noi 5000
Hoan
Kiem
Lake, opened on Thursday at the Viet Nam Museum of Fine Arts.
The title comes from an interview with a Hanoian teenager and is reflective of many aspirations residents have when it comes to Ha Noi’s enormous potential for growth.

"A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth even glancing at”.
The fact that this famous phrase by Oscar Wilde is frequently used as an epigraph for the writings of specialists on urbanism and historians, architects and art critics is evidence of humanity’s longing for the ideal place of habitation. The word Utopia serves as a metaphor for human hopes for a better environment, for social justice and for spiritual renewal.
The utopian vision of the future, as dreams about the harmonious conditions of life and life-spaces, has accompanied humanity through all stages of its history.

The audience might feel surprised and maybe confused coming across this strange sentence-the title of this exhibition "Hanoi. 5000 Hoan Kiem Lakes”. In fact, this sentence is a quotation from an interview with a Hanoian teenager and it reflects his dreams for the best possible city.

A strong desire to look at his life as an outsider would, inspired Nguyen Xuan Long to create his first solo exhibition Portrait.
"Besides reflecting on the surrounding world, my favourite theme in most of my works is myself and how I change with time”,Long said.
Starting work on the series at the beginning of 2001, he said he wanted to use images of himself to speak about the relation between the individual and the surrounding world.
